The Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid’s main tourist attractions and draws in millions of visitors a year.

The Plaza is not a forefront in architectural art, however the pleasant atmosphere here will surely lead to a pleasant experience. It’s popular with Spanish citizens as well as tourists, making a good place to meet and interact with citizens of the country.

Founded thousands of years before, the Plaza Mayor formed its estimated recent form in 1790 following the last fire that took place. In a literal sense, it has functioned as an area for the public by having bullfights, festivals, political clashes and even be-headings. It would be even more worth the trip if you should study the history of the area.

Measuring 100m on each side and being nearly square, it may not be exceptionally large, but it has the capacity to hold 50,000 people at once. Throughout the summer season, the Plaza is particularly packed. There are still some festivals that take place during the year, and that is a great time to drop by in order to have the real Spanish experience.

Restaurants, cafes, and bars are abound if you want to sit down and have lunch or dinner, or if you just want to relax with a drink for a while. A wide range of traditional Spanish dishes can be found, and at reasonable prices too. Various gift shops are also abound for your browsing pleasure, ready sell you trinkets to remind you of your wonderful trip.

Buildings that encircle the Plaza are convenient places for looking down upon events that are taking place down below. This way you can avoid the crowds and still drink in the atmosphere and experience the sights and sounds of The Plaza Mayor.
